Joint UWE & UWESU Environmental Policy
The following Environmental & Sustainability policy was jointly agreed between UWE & UWESU in March 2008
Environmental Policy
Through teaching and research the University of the West of England contributes positively to advancing the understanding, processes, governance and technology that is needed for global sustainability. The University also recognises that the way it carries out all of its activities should be managed so as to minimise environmental harm.
This policy commits the University of the West of England to the following:
- Providing leadership and support for environmental management within the University
- Identifying, complying with and exceeding where possible all environmental legislation and other requirements relevant to its activities
- Identifying and managing the significant environmental aspects relevant to its activities
- Continually improving its environmental performance through the implementation and review of objectives and targets
- Preventing pollution wherever possible
- Minimising its impact on climate change by conserving energy, reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and promoting sustainable travel
- Carrying out whole life costing of projects over a value of £0.5m
- Promoting the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste
- Improving habitats and encouraging biodiversity on the University estate
- Reducing water consumption where possible
- Working with suppliers and contractors through a sustainable procurement strategy to improve sustainability performance
- Enhancing student knowledge of sustainability
- Giving staff relevant environmental training and opportunities to get involved
- Being a Healthy University
- Working closely with our local community and other institutions and organisations to share best practice
- Regular auditing, reviewing and reporting of progress
The Pro Vice-Chancellor is responsible for environmental and sustainability matters at the University. All staff and students share this responsibility and are supported by the University Sustainability Board and Environmental Management Coordinators Group.
