A message from Stuart Redden, Head UWE Rowing Coach (including all other results):
This weekend saw the 17th annual varsity rowing boat race take place on the docks. Some of you I know were in attendance and thank you for coming and lending your support. It was a great day not only did the weather old up this year encouraging lots of spectators but I am pleased to report that we won back the varsity boat race blade for the first time since 2008 and for only the 6th time since it started. On the day there were 7 races with 5 counting towards the varsity blade. These races are the men’s and women’s beginner 8s, men’s 2nd 8 and the men’s and women’s 1st 8s. The other 2 races this year where a men’s alumni race and a race where our men’s novice second 8 raced Bristol’s senior 4th 8. The racing was great all day long with most of the races being won by less than a length and the biggest distance being 3 lengths. Of the 5 races that count towards the blade UWE won 4-1 with wins in the men’s and women’s beginner events and winning the men’s 1st and 2nd 8s. And over all we won 5-2 on the day as out men’s novice 2nd 8 won as well over senior opposition.
It was a very proud day for the club and I must congratulate all athletes that competed on the day racing so hard but also the athletes that missed out on selection but have been vital parts of the squads. Massive congratulation must also go to my coaching team of Nick Quirke and Rod Sanchez, especially Nick who on top of the beginner men 7 weeks ago took on the hwt men’s group which went on to race as the 1st 8 and win. 6 of this crew had only 1 years rowing experience and all learnt to row here at UWE under nick.
I’d also like to thank the continued support we receive from all of you. And thank the SU for the large amount of time and effort that went in to running the varsity event so well this weekend.
